CONNECTIONS THROUGH LITERATURE: Man, this book SCARED THE SHIT out of me! If you aren't familiar with H. G. Wells' novel The War of the Worlds it is about an alien invasion in south eastern England where the main character, as well as everyone else, is fleeing for his life. The aliens that invade decimate everything then collect the remaining humans into cages for harvesting. SPOILER ALERT the aliens end up dying from consuming and contracting our fatal diseases. The major connection I felt was how terrifying it would be to be hunted down and confined to a cage with others who are also confused and scared. I don't think we actually consider this enough, being in the victims place. With us (humans) being "at the top of the food chain", we rarely feel the fear of being prey. Another connection is them dying from our diseases. When we consume animals we are susceptible to their zoonotic diseases such as tuberculosis (aka Consumption), cow pox, avian and swine flu, ebola, influenza, salmonella, and the list goes on. We are also plagued with diseases of civilization such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, cancer, obesity, and again the list goes on. We all know that eating animal flesh and secretions are bad for us. Were taught "everything in moderation". I've grown up seeing this all around me. My mother was/is morbidly obese, her birth father died of heart disease, her brother had a severe stroke in his 40s, my second grandfather died of cancer and just this past Christmas my partner's grandfather, who seemed otherwise relatively healthy, died from a double massive stroke. All members of my family bragged about their gluttony. My second grandpa made fun of me for eating "rabbit food" while gnawing the gristle and fat from his steak which were "the best parts". The top 3 leading causes of death in Canada (stats Canada 2012) 1. Cancer 2. Heart disease 3. Stroke. MANY studies have come out showing that not only does a plant based diet prevent these but in some cases can reverse them. If you wanna learn more about this I'd recommend checking out @joyfulvegan's podcast episodes "The Lethal Gifts of Livestock" and Diseases of Civilization (aka "Lifestyle Diseases").
